Khutbah’s Jumu’ah: DEBT
Today’s Khutbah is about an important matter that affects many of us—the issue of debt (Dayn). In our modern world, where the use of loans and credit has become widespread, it is crucial that we, as Muslims, understand the Islamic perspective on debt and how we should manage it, according to the teachings of our religion.
The longest verse in
the Qur’an is the verse about debts. The verse is found in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 282.
It demonstrates that Islam places great emphasis on the importance of repaying debt. Our Prophet
Muhammad SAW was known to pray fervently for protection against debt. In a
Hadith reported by Abu Huraira (RA), the Prophet SAW would seek refuge in Allah
from the burden of debt, saying:
"O Allah, I seek
refuge with You from sin and heavy debt." (Sahih Bukhari)
When asked why he
often sought refuge from debt, he explained that a person in debt might lie and
break promises. This shows the moral and spiritual dangers associated with
failing to manage debts properly.
Dear brothers, it is a
serious obligation in Islam to repay debts. The Qur'an emphasizes the importance of fulfilling
promises and obligations, and repaying debts is a form of fulfilling a trust.
Allah (SWT) says:
"O you who have
believed, fulfill [all] contracts..." (Surah Al-Ma'idah, 5:1)
And in another verse:
"And fulfill
[every] commitment. Indeed, the commitment is ever [that about which one will
be] questioned." (Surah Al-Isra, 17:34)
The Prophet Muhammad (SAW)
also highlighted the gravity of not repaying debts. He said:
"The soul of the
believer is suspended by his debt until it is paid off." (Sunan at-Tirmidhi)
This Hadith serves as
a reminder that even after death, a person’s soul may be burdened by unpaid
debts, underscoring the importance of settling them in one’s lifetime.
Dear brothers, let us
remember that debt is a serious matter in Islam. We should approach it with
caution, fulfill our obligations with sincerity, and seek Allah’s help in
managing our financial affairs. If we are in debt, we should strive to repay it
as soon as possible, and if we are in a position to help others, we should do
so generously.
May Allah protect us
from the burden of debt, grant us the ability to fulfill our obligations, and
ease the difficulties of all those who are struggling with financial burdens.
Ameen.
